Rev. Dr. Vandy Kennedy
His mantra is, “only what you do for Christ will last.” Here are a few highlights of his distinguished and godly service:
Came from meager beginnings in South Carolina. Moved to Prince George’s County and began a career with National Park Service where in 1972, he helped rescue and recover passengers from the Potomac River when an airplane crashed into the 14th Street Bridge. Seventy-five lives were lost in that accident and the incident moved him to grow closer to Christ and commit to a life of serving others.
Was called into Ministry at Mt. Jezreel Baptist Church under the teaching of Dr. Harold E. Trammell and was ordained in 1983.
Purchased the World’s Largest Barbeque Pit restaurant on Central Avenue where he and his wife, Verbenia, prepared and served delicious meals for years.
Founded the Walker Mill Gardens Community Outreach Center (now Walker Mill CDC) in 1988 in response to growing violence and substance abuse in the community. Programs have included transitional housing, HIV/AIDS testing and prevention services, day care and learning programs, urban farming, boxing and so much more.
As his heart for loving and serving all people grew, he launched Walker Mill Baptist Mission to hold Bible Study and worship services and in 1991 was installed as the Senior Pastor of the newly established Walker Mill Baptist Church in Capitol Heights.
Received a Doctorate degree from Howard University and a Doctor of Humanity letter from Faith Community College.
Organized foreign mission initiatives with Kenya, East Africa including digging wells for clean drinking water, collecting and distributing 700+ pairs of eyeglasses, donating medical supplies and equipment, and providing tons of corn meal for widows and orphans.
Authored a book, Unity in Our Communities, which is his solution to global problems, is derived from loving, living and learning together, requires keeping God at the center of everything.
